About this dish
The Croque-Monsieur is a classic hot sandwich of French cuisine, appreciated for its tasty flavor and simplicity. At its base, it is a ham and cheese sandwich, usually Gruyère or Emmental, sandwiched between two slices of sandwich bread. What makes it unique is the cooking method: the sandwich is usually buttered on the outside, then grilled in a pan or in the oven until the bread becomes crispy and golden and the cheese melts to perfection. In some versions, the Croque-Monsieur is topped with a creamy béchamel sauce before being baked au gratin, giving it an extra layer of richness and flavor. Sometimes garnished with mustard or pickles for a touch of tanginess, this sandwich is a staple of French cafés and bistros, often served with a green salad or fries for a simple yet comforting meal.
