About this dish

Pain perdu, also called "French toast" in some English-speaking countries, is a delicious dish made by soaking slices of stale bread in a mixture of milk, beaten eggs, and sugar, then pan-frying them in a hot pan with a little butter or oil. This preparation gives a second life to bread that is starting to go stale. Once golden, pain perdu is often served hot, dusted with powdered sugar, cinnamon, or drizzled with maple syrup. It can also be topped with fresh fruit, jam, or whipped cream for an indulgent breakfast or comforting dessert. Originally, this popular recipe was an economical way to use leftover bread and avoid waste. Today, it is enjoyed for its delicious taste and its texture, both crispy and soft.
