About this dish
Baked beans are a popular dish in North America, particularly in the United States and Canada. This dish consists of white beans slow-cooked in a sweet and savory tomato-based sauce with molasses or brown sugar, often enhanced with bacon or salt pork, and sometimes onions and spices. The origin of baked beans dates back to Native American peoples, who cooked beans with maple syrup and deer fat. European settlers adapted this recipe using locally available ingredients, such as molasses and salt pork. Baked beans became a staple of North American cuisine, often served as a side dish at barbecues, picnics, or hearty breakfasts, symbolizing the fusion of Native American and European culinary traditions.
