8 naans

Ingredients

  • 335 g all-purpose flour
  • 1 tsp sugar
  • 125 ml warm water
  • 7 g dry baker's yeast
  • 3 tbsp plain yogurt
  • 0.5 tsp salt
  • 1 tbsp vegetable oil
  • 1 box cream cheese

Instructions

  1. 1Mix the flour, sugar, water, yeast, salt, yogurt, and a drizzle of olive oil in a bowl.
  2. 2Once the dough starts to form a ball, turn it out onto a floured surface and knead for 10 minutes or until smooth.
  3. 3Put it back in a greased bowl and cover with a cloth for 30 minutes, or until it has doubled in size.
  4. 4Remove the dough from the bowl and place it on an oiled work surface.
  5. 5Cut the dough into 8 equal pieces.
  6. 6Roll the 8 pieces into tight, smooth balls before rolling them out with a rolling pin.
  7. 7Place a small portion of cheese in the center of each circle of dough.
  8. 8Bring the edges of the dough together to cover the cheese.
  9. 9Roll out each ball into a 12 cm circle, making sure to seal the edges well so the cheese doesn't leak out during cooking.
  10. 10Cook the naans in a hot pan for about 2 minutes per side.

About this dish

Naan is a traditional flatbread of Indian origin, famous for its soft texture and its ability to accompany a variety of dishes. Made mainly of wheat flour, water, yeast, and yogurt, it is often enriched with ingredients like garlic, cilantro, or butter for extra flavor. Its preparation begins with kneading the dough, which is then left to rise. Once risen, the dough is divided into small portions, rolled into oval or round shapes, and cooked at high heat. Traditionally, naan is baked in a tandoor, a clay oven, which gives it its characteristic texture—slightly crispy outside and soft inside. Served hot, often brushed with butter or ghee, naan is a popular accompaniment to dishes like curry, dhal, or other spicy meals, soaking up sauces while adding a pleasant sweetness to the meal.
