About this dish
Tonkatsu is a popular Japanese dish made from a thick slice of pork, breaded and fried until crispy and golden. The meat, usually loin or fillet, is first tenderized, then coated in flour, dipped in beaten egg, and finally covered in panko (Japanese breadcrumbs) for an extra crispy texture. Tonkatsu is traditionally served with finely shredded cabbage, lemon slices, and a thick, sweet tonkatsu sauce, similar to Worcestershire sauce but thicker and milder. This dish is often accompanied by white rice and miso soup, forming a complete meal. It is also popular in sandwiches called katsu sando or as a topping for Japanese curry. Tonkatsu is prized for its satisfying texture and comforting flavor, perfectly combining the crunch of the breadcrumbs with the tenderness of the pork.
