About this dish
Bakwan are popular Indonesian fried fritters, often considered appetizers or side dishes. They are made from a batter based on flour, coconut milk, water and sometimes egg, mixed with various vegetables such as carrots, cabbage, bean sprouts and sometimes spices or herbs to enhance the flavor. After being shaped into small bites, the bakwan are plunged into hot oil until golden and crispy. Served hot, they are often accompanied by spicy or sweet-and-sour sauces, which add an extra touch to their crunchy texture. Bakwan can also include proteins such as chicken, shrimp or tofu, making these fritters not only delicious but also nutritious. In Indonesia, they are a popular choice for parties, gatherings or simply as a tasty snack at any time of day.
