About this dish
Nasi goreng, literally translated as "fried rice", is an iconic dish of Indonesian cuisine. It's a simple yet flavorful preparation of fried rice mixed with a variety of ingredients. Typically, nasi goreng is seasoned with sweet soy sauce, garlic, tamarind, and sometimes shrimp paste for a deep umami flavor. It can include vegetables, chicken, shrimp, or other meats, and is often topped with crispy fried onions. A distinctive feature is the addition of an egg, either mixed directly into the rice for a creamy texture, or served fried on top. Traditionally, nasi goreng is accompanied by cucumber slices, shrimp chips (krupuk), and a small portion of pickles. Whether for breakfast, lunch, or dinner, this comforting dish is loved for its rich flavor and versatility.
