  • 2 egg(s)
  • 1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • salt
  • pepper
  • 200 ml tomato sauce
  • 50 ml cider vinegar
  • 50 ml hot sauce
  • 50 g brown sugar

Instructions

Preparing the meatloaf:

  1. 1Preheat the oven to 170°C.
  2. 2Finely chop the onion and set aside.
  3. 3In a large bowl, mix the panko breadcrumbs, milk, paprika, and garlic powder.
  4. 4Once the milk has been fully absorbed by the breadcrumbs, add the beaten eggs and mix well.
  5. 5Then add the ground beef and ground pork, the chopped onion, the Worcestershire sauce, and season with salt and pepper.
  6. 6Mix well with your hands until you get an even consistency.

Cooking the meatloaf:

  1. 7Grease a loaf pan and put the meat mixture in it.
  2. 8Turn the loaf pan over and unmold the meatloaf onto a baking sheet.
  3. 9Bake in the preheated oven for 15 minutes.
  4. 10While the meatloaf bakes, mix the tomato sauce, apple cider vinegar, hot sauce, and brown sugar in a saucepan over medium heat.
  5. 11Cook, stirring, until the sugar is fully dissolved.
  6. 12After the first 15 minutes of baking, remove the meatloaf from the oven and brush it with half of the tomato sauce glaze.
  7. 13Return to the oven and bake for another 15 minutes.
  8. 14Brush the meatloaf with the other half of the glaze and return to the oven for another 20 minutes, or until the internal temperature reaches 70°C.
  9. 15Remove the meatloaf from the oven and let it rest for 10 minutes.
  10. 16Serve sliced with mashed potatoes and peas.

About this dish

Meatloaf is a traditional dish that has its origins in Europe, particularly in Germany and Belgium. It became popular in the United States in the early 19th century thanks to European immigrants. Meatloaf is usually made of ground meat (often beef or a mix of beef and pork), mixed with ingredients like eggs, breadcrumbs, onions, spices, and herbs. The mixture is shaped into a loaf, then baked in the oven. Often, a sauce, such as ketchup or a tomato sauce, is spread on top to add flavor and keep it moist during baking. Meatloaf is appreciated for its simplicity, versatility, and comforting character, and it remains a familiar dish in American households.
